Hey everyone! Last time I posted, I shared a few quick process videos. I’m happy to say I have a new one to share with you again today.
This video shows the process of painting ‘Blink’ from the X-Men, for the latest Marvel Masterpieces trading card set.
The most challenging part of this painting for me was the color. Blink has pink skin with reddish hair, and I was worried about the image looking too ‘Christmas-y’ given the green of her outfit. It took a few color studies to get it right, but I managed to avoid some issues by shifting the pink skin more toward a purple than red. The other challenge was getting her magical portals to glow as much as I’d wanted while not detracting from her magical dagger or her face. That simply took some planning and careful mixing.
If anyone is interested in learning more about how to paint images like this, I’m happy to announce that enrollment is officially open for the Fall Semester of my SmART School class.
This class is an intensive 14-week mentorship designed specifically to help you take your art to the next level. Dan, this is amazing! I have two questions. 1) I assume your model reference was lit with normal light. Why not shoot with her with a colored gel? Does that lose too much detail? and 2) I assumed you would glaze the pinks and purples over her but you went in with fresh opaque paint. Did you think glazing would get muddy? I’m asking because I wouldn’t know how to approach this! π Also, I’ve always loved your Stoneforge Mystic. – Mike
Hi Mike,
Good questions. And I would probably do all of those things you suggested if not for the insane deadlines on this series. I only had 3 days per painting for this entire set. Thatβs just not enough time to book models, or enough time to let paint dry enough to glaze over it. The result is, I had to paint most things with minimal reference, and I had to paint it all in a single coat of paint. Itβs not my typical process, it in this case, it worked thanks to lots of color and value studies.
Woah – all the more impressive!
