Who says Coloring Contests are only for kids?

I was in my local movie theatre the other day, and I saw a flyer on their counter for a coloring contest, and I thought to myself, “It’s a shame companies don’t do this more often”. As a child, it seemed that every establishment I walked in with my parents, be it a grocery store, general store, or diner; had a coloring contest of some sort, which I would eagerly enter.

Being quite poor in my youth, this one one of the few ways I could actually afford the things I wanted. I was always entering drawing and coloring contests in an attempt to win a gift certificate to my favorite comic shop.

Not only do these contests seem to be a rarity nowadays, but I think it’s a shame that when you do see them, they are only targeted to children, as if Adults don’t have a need to express themselves creatively and try new things. Thankfully Adult Coloring Books have been on the rise lately, enticing a lot of people to pick up a marker and simply color for the pure meditative enjoyment of coloring, often for the first time in their lives.

In our house, someone is always coloring, myself included. I think the act of coloring a composition that is pre-determined is really fun and surprisingly challenging. You can change the entire feel of a piece of art simply by altering a palette or adding a dramatic light source.

Which brings us to the point of this post… As one of her Kickstarter backers, I received an email today from Annie Stegg Gerard. In it, she included a link to a free PDF of one of her ink drawings that will appear in her new coloring book. She is offering this high-resolution image to encourage people to color it themselves. Annie will also be coloring the image as part of a demo later this week so that participants can she how she herself handled it.

So in the spirit of education and childish enthusiasm, I would like to encourage you all to try it out!

Of course, like any good coloring contest, we need a prize. So how about we give away FREE STREAMING ACCESS TO ALL OF OUR MUDDY COLORS VIDEOS FOR ONE YEAR.  In fact, let’s give away two! One for best traditional coloring, and one for best digital coloring.

Again, that’s free, unlimited access to every video you see here for a whole year (valued at $360).

All you have to is download the image found here, and color it any way you want. Then upload it somewhere on the internet, Facebook or whatever, and post a link to it right here in the comment section. Easy Peasy! The deadline to submit your entry is Sunday, November 26th at midnight PT (Pacific Time). We will pick our winners right after Thanksgiving weekend.

I colored it with traditional media. Mixed media (acrylics, inks, color pencils, pens) on cardstock paper. I'm sorry the text didn't appear, I didn't know how to use this weird marker for the frame and it smeared through the whole border =( I tagged Annie Stegg-Gerard first of all so people know first it's her line art!

Several people have linked to public FB photos so I'm trusting that it works.

This was created with Adobe Sketch on an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.

Thanks for the excuse to try something different! I really enjoyed this.
