This Month in Covers : September/October

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Once again, it’s time for our (almost) monthly installment ‘This Month in Covers’, where I explore some new covers that I personally find eye-catching and are currently on the shelf. It’s really easy to get your fill of art just from perusing Facebook and Instagram. But if you’re an aspiring illustrator, I implore to get your butt to an actual brick and mortar bookstore and take a look at what is actually on the shelf and currently defining market trends. Part of what makes producing good cover art so difficult is that it has to stand out amongst an ocean of other really good covers. It’s an important aspect of the industry, and one that you can only get an appreciation from when you actually go into a book store of comic shop. There are a few pieces in this month’s segment that I only discovered this month, despite their earlier release date, but they were simply too good to pass up a mention. Enjoy!

Review: VR Sketch Transfer

Mighty Men & Monster Maker

I take a real enjoyment in going back to the things that inspired me as a kid, and got me into art in the first place. Lately I've been on a kick of re-watching old television shows I enjoyed as a kid (introducing them to my children now), and re-reading the comic...

Wow! Some seriously good stuff! The 2 that stood out for me are 'Le Petite Loup Rouge' … it just wants me to be a child again and read that book (nothing stopping us grown-ups from doing it) and the 2nd one is 'The Tiger's Daughter' … so strong, so much 'weight' to it. Gorgeous!

Last week in particular was an amazing week for covers. Most of these covers came out on almost the same day.

As for 'Le Petite Loup Rouge', UI highly recommend the book. It's a picture book with full page illustrations throughout, all equally as beautiful as the cover.
