Quick post today as I am just getting back in the door from Illuxcon! It was another great year of mayhem and mischief and we are already looking forward to next year’s event in Reading, PA. I’d like to send a special thank you to the the event’s staff, and particularly the folks at the loading dock. You guys are the real MVP’s.
These preliminary images are for a new painting entitled, “One of Those Days,” which will be another in a series of images involving dwarven hunting accidents. The plan for this painting is to do a watercolor underpainting, seal it in acrylic and finish it in oil. A good, clean, simple plan. What could go wrong?

OK. I asked since it felt like a conundrum what kind of surface would soak water but not get oil stains. I suppose it isn't ideal for watercolor, though? Interesting experiment, for sure!
I paint the watercolor first, then seal in acrylic (matte medium) so that later when I begin to paint in oils, the oil cannot permeate through to the paper. This was a really quick preview post so I didn't have time to cover this in more detail. But in my next post I will lay out the technical aspects of this in much more detail!
I suspected as much, but thought that it wouldn't be enough protection, but I suppose it would, if it's done well. Thanks for taking the time to answer!
Justin, Did you ever end up doing an oil over watercolor? I was thinking of trying it and wondered if it was a miserable failure or it had some merit?
