Art Tip of The Month #13: Removing Taped Borders

Monday, August 6th, 2018

There’s so much to learn when you’re slinging paint and pencil, so here’s the eleventh installment in my monthly segment, Muddy Colors: Art Tip of the Month with Jeff Miracola. Each of my short videos will share a handy tip to help you create magnificent art.

My art tip this month is: Removing Taped Borders

If you’ve created a painting on a surface that needed taped borders to either hold down the painting surface or just because you wanted nice clean edges to your final painting, then you know how exciting removing that tape can be. In this video I share a deceptively simple art tip that will help you to not ruin your painting as you remove your taped borders.

Review: VR Sketch Transfer

I hate transferring my sketch. I hate it. Every method I have found is tedious. Projectors and transfer paper lose important small details, and to get out of the way of the projection, I lean and bend in unnatural positions for long periods of time. There's more, but...

It's no secret to anyone that's been following Muddy Colors awhile that I am really deeply interested in the psychology around why people become artists, and how becoming a "professional" "full-time" artist affects that. For example, I've written posts on the...

    Hi,

Thanks for the video. That was a new tip to me.

Question: What type of masking tape (brand) do you recommend? The one I use leaves irregular borders even though I press down on it with a pallette knife, the other is pretty tight, but always tears the paper….

I use 3M brand blue painter’s tape. I buy mine at Amazon or get it locally at a Home Depot. It’s pretty easy to find most places. Painter’s tape is good because it isn’t too sticky and can be removed easily. But it still keeps a good enough seal to allow you to have clean edges.

Thanks a lot, I was using 3M, but not the blue type, I will check that one out!

Nice video once again! Taking so much care and having the paint overlapping onto the tape still leaving an irregular edge is frustrating. This will definitely help!

    Thanks for sharing!

It’s all about bringing that patience and care ALL the way to the end of the process. Thanks for the tip!

Pssst. Always cut to the outside of the ruler, not the inside. That way if you slip, you won’t scratch your drawing.
