Short Take: Rim Light

During my classes online, I’m asked by students over and over again, ‘show me how I can improve my paintings.’ Besides needing to get better at drawing, paint mixing and application, composition, and value control-- handling light is the most overlooked aspect of...

I hate the pleasure and honor to speak with Jack Kirby for a few minutes during a nearly rained out comic convention in some hotel in NYC. This was back in the early nineties, just a few years before his death.

Attendance was so poor because of the crazy rain and I just wandered over to Jack as he stood behind his table. We talked for a few, I asked him what he thought of comics “today” (remember, being the 90's)- with the lean towards edginess and dark mood of so many of the stories. He shook his head. He was not impressed.

We only talked for a few minutes. Then he was pulled away. …I grew up on Jack Kirby's stories. I was thrilled to have the chance to talk with him.

“Hate” the pleasure? I mean, “had” the pleasure.

    Whoa… how did that happen?

Thanks for the story, Phesten. We're lucky to have conventions and the like that allow us to meet our influences. I'm envious you got to meet Jack in particular.
