SmArt School Enrollment Now Open

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

SmArt School is a one-on-one mentorship program designed by IMC creator, Rebecca Guay. The program gives students the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals 3 hours a week, for 12 weeks.

Unlike some online programs, this course is not a series of pre-recorded lectures. It is a true mentorship program. Through an interactive interface, your mentor will will be discussing your work specifically, painting over it while you watch, and helping you achieve whatever it is you are looking to achieve.

This year’s mentors include: Donato Giancola, Todd Lockwood, Rebecca Guay, Greg Manchess & Dan DosSantos.

In addition to the Mentor’s input, each course also invites a well-known Art Director to help critique and give the students feedback. Students are also given the opportunity to monitor other Mentors’ classes in order to glean what they can from a different point of view.

Maybe you missed your chance to sign up for this year’s IMC? Or maybe you are looking for a more intimate setting where you and a teacher can really explore YOUR possibilities? Whatever the reason, I have seen a great number of students make that elusive shift from amateur to professional thanks to these programs.

Enrollment has just opened today, and class size is extremely limited.

The Creative Arts Conference – June 2026

Back in 2020, I helped to put on a workshop called the Fantastic Arts Conference with my wife, Shari, and Dan Dos Santos, Justin and Annie Stegg Gerard. We had some great faculty who joined us. I have had lots of requests to do something similar again, but with less...

Oh man I would so love to participate in this program. It's such a fantastic opportunity with some of my favorite artists. I will be saving my pennies for this. Maybe not this year, but definitely keeping it in mind for the future!

I was in Donato's class this last semester. It was so awesome! I feel like I am about to make the leap to the next plateau in my artistic growth and what I learned in SAS was a big part of that.

I've been staring at this school longingly ever since finding it. How often do you guys open up to enrollment? It's not a cost I can afford outright now, but with some freelance stuff under my belt it might be something I could consider much later this year or early next.

I believe it's twice a year, Sam. Like school semesters.

Is there anything comparable to this for a comic artist? Someone working primarily in ink as opposed to paint. Paolo, do you know?

Not that I'm aware of, but TAD does have some instructors with a heavy comics background.

Nathan Fox also just started a new program at SVA for sequential storytelling (though that one is not online).

Perhaps Rebecca will look into having a comic guy next semester. I know she got Mike Mignola teach at this year's IMC, and that dude's inks are about as impressive as it gets.
