Mars Violet – Up Close and Personal

Thursday, November 1st, 2018

Taking a close look at a couple of paintings in my series of fantasy warriors, an alternative take on the Red Sonya theme, and a little ‘Black and Orange’ to celebrate  Halloween yesterday!

What I enjoy most about these latest works is the chance to loosen up with my color application and get a bit ‘messy’.  I love to use ‘broken color’ as I build up the work, making a yellow dragon not so perfectly yellow or a red leather vest filled with broken bits of blues, grays, greens, yellows and finally a bit of Red to pull it all together!

For those of you who may be at the World Fantasy Convention in Baltimore starting Thursday November 1, Dragon Tamer will be hanging in the Art Show this weekend.

A tip of the hat to Jules Bastien-Lepage, the 19th French painter, who opened my eyes to this approach in painting.  I am older than I seem…
