It is pretty rare that freelance artists for Magic the Gathering get to help design a character for magic the Gathering. Often they are already set in stone. It is also rare in my experience that I get to paint the same legendary character twice! (Would love to paint Kiora again if you are listening MTG! LOL!)
But in this case I was able to achieve both. A character I helped design by painting her the first time.
So lets dig in with this 14 minute narrated video. She is all oil paint on cradled panel. (Even did some stenciling on this one.) Safe to say I had a blast swimming in her Art Deco bliss.
Scott M. Fischer graduated with honors from the Savannah College of Art and Design and since that time his brush has steadily been carving a path along the illustration landscape.

He is the silhouette artist behind the #1 NY Times best selling books, ‘Peter Pan in Scarlet’ . (Simon and Schuster) and Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer’s ‘Between the Lines' (Simon and Schuster). He is a notable cover artist for, Simon and Schuster, Tor, Harper Collins, Scholastic, Penguin, Del Rey, Random House, Daw, etc.
Fully illustrated middle grade fiction credits include the New York Times best selling ‘Magesterium’ series by Cassandra Claire and Holly Black (Scholastic), ’The Secrets of Dripping Fang’ series by Dan Greenburg (Harcourt) and the ’Scary School series of books by Derek the Ghost (Harper Collins). And ‘Ghost Prison’ by Joseph Delaney (Sourcebooks Fire).
His Children’s Book credits include ‘Jump!’ (Simon and Schuster) with over 3,000,000 books in print, ‘Twinkle’ (Simon and Schuster) and the ‘Lottie Paris’ series of books written by Angela Johnson (Simon and Schuster).
Scott is well known in fantasy art and gaming art circles, contributing to Magic- The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and as a conceptual character designer for companies like Microsoft and Disney, on their TRON franchise.

Tank you for sharing your video here! It’s so neat to be able to observe the actual paining process. I especially liked how enthusiastic you were about doing this work 🙂
since you asked us about the two versions: I like the design and the abstract background in the new version, but those golden orange lights in the older one are neat as well. The New one has more energy while the older on feels more serene to me. There is no better or worser, just difference.
Traded for this card (full art, foil) from a friend and am very, very happy! The dream is to one day have a full angels deck … all done by your hand. Now that would look stunning!!!
It’s always inspiring to hear when an artist gets to revisit and evolve a character they helped bring to life especially in a world as rich as Magic the Gathering. The mix of oil painting and stenciling must add incredible texture and depth to Giada’s new look. I recently read about creative font design inspiration on Unitextify, which reminds me of how unique artistic expression can be across both visuals and typography.
