I think as creative humans, it’s important to have a deep and strong connection to the senses. And I feel that all senses are a support to the others. They work in tandem, and along with understanding and openness, a presence. For example, let’s take what it is to see. What does “to see” mean to you?
I feel that to see is…
To be awake, aware, to let ourselves be lifted by all that we are a part of. To feel and breathe the surroundings. To notice and admire from the simplest to the most complex of things. To be carved into something new by the witnessing and the desire for an understanding of what we feel a pull towards. To be present, immersed in the sound and sights and what is felt and experienced. To believe, and to take note of and question our disbelief. To endure and be discerning. To look with an open mind. To be full of wonder. To expand the soul by what we are attentive towards.
To see is to explore what’s beyond the orbs of sight, and venture through the portals by which we feel. To climb the strata formed of infinite perspectives, to grasp, to contemplate, to wander there, alive and open. To sift the layers constantly eroding, rubbing away and weathered. To live the stories that are in the cracks and sediment. Some tales are of adversity, difficulty and perseverance. Some tales are curious enrapturing of delight and awe. All are familiar by virtue of noticing.
It’s to be attentive, to recognize this continuous way of experiencing that we are all a part of this fabric, woven into these worlds and realms of tangible and intangible, experience and unknown, sensations and visual language, and exploring different ways to share it all.
These are what form us, and with hope, are what connect us all. They show us what we are a part of, and not apart from. We are interfused, free in our sensing everything as ourselves, in reflecting in present moment what time and space cannot ever hold but will always know, a constant presence, a moment bonded by the truest form of seeing: to feel what we are a part of when we are present. What we create is made stronger by this knowing.

Vanessa, this piece really resonated with me. ‘Beyond the orbs of sight’ perfectly encapsulates that deeper connection artists often strive for. It’s a beautiful reminder to truly experience the world, not just observe it. Thank you for articulating something so many of us feel but struggle to put into words.
What an inspiring read! I often find myself getting caught up in the technical aspects of art, but this reminds me to open myself up to the world around me and let it shape my creative process. Definitely going to reread this when I feel stuck. Thankably for such a profound perspective!
This is a concept I definitely want to integrate more into my work. Do you have any specific exercises or daily practices you recommend for cultivating this ‘seeing beyond sight’? I’m always looking for ways to deepen my artistic connection.
Spot on! I’ve always felt that my best work comes from moments when I’m truly present, whether it’s sketching outdoors or just quietly observing. It’s like the world gives you its secrets when you’re truly ‘seeing.’ Thanks for validating that feeling.
