I’d like to try something a little different this August on Muddy Colors and engage you in my process in a more direct way.
Below, you’ll find a full page of sketches pulled straight from one of my sketchbooks. Each individual sketch is numbered so you can reference it. What I would like you to do is take a moment, look through these eight sketches, and choose the number of the one that speaks to you the most and comment here.
This will serve as your vote for which piece should be taken forward to the next stage.
The plan is simple: once all the votes are in, I’ll take the “winning” image and fully develop it into a polished, finished drawing.
This completed drawing will be featured in the next MC post I share here in October, but I won’t be stopping there.
The journey will continue as I push the piece further, evolving it into a fully realized painting. Along the way, I’ll be documenting the process in detail, including work-in-progress shots, breakdowns of the materials I’m using, and notes on the media, tools, and techniques that are shaping the final result.
I am going to tally the votes here on Muddy Colors though I will share throughout my other social media platforms. If only one person responds with a vote here, then that single choice will automatically become the piece that moves forward. If there happens to be a tie between two or more sketches, I’ll break the deadlock with a simple coin flip or dice roll. You get the idea.
Also, as you look through the photos below, you’ll notice my custom sketch format templates. These are made with my own 3D printer and tailored specifically for my workflow. I use these templates to create precise, proportionally accurate sketch outlines that match standard sizes, including 9×12, 18×24, 1×1, and 12×24 formats, among others.
(also included is my breakfast… for scale I guess)
These templates make it incredibly easy to jump into a composition knowing the scale will be consistent from sketch to finished work. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference in keeping my process efficient and my final pieces in the right size and proportion (though I will occasionally (and frequently) break out of the box).
The votes will only be tallied here on Muddy Colors though, as I said before, I am going to post the images throughout my social media posts so people can come here and vote!
Tell me what you think, what you like, what intrigues you about one of these and what YOU think I should work on next.
Enjoy!
For some reason, 3 is calling to me. It’s like a demonic seahorse

I really like #7. I think that the space below the main figure could be very interesting as it develops.
7! i love the negative space!
3.

I am tossed between 3 and 4 depending how much further they are pushed and the
flow of the image. It would be awesome maybe with 4 protruding from the top of
the dragon tail of 3.
Overall 3

7 looks compelling!
7 is the one!
Is that a plate of huevos rancheros with a glass of warm milk??
7!
Number 3 has a fun dynamic to it.

Number 3! III

7 and Thank you.

I’ve got to go with #3. I just want to see how that thing turns out.
3 for the interesting shapes and the flow of the negative space
7 is the one for me 🙂
You describe embarking on an intriguing evolution of the chosen work. In that spirit, I’d vote for #1 as it is the figure most dynamic, in motion, and the piece with the most promising background evolution. Were I to hang any of them right now, that one would give me the most to dwell upon and perhaps allow you the maximum potency. Nice promo and motivational angle. Master you of many tangents.
I love all of them, but #4 tells me it has a lot of potential for development.
8 – interesting how it would grow from the sketch

Cool idea for a series! I’m partial to #4
Definitely #3!!! Love the design work on it so far and I can just see something special waiting to pop out.
8 because I love old archways and cemetery design. could be a very interesting outcome
7 for me 🙂
May I suggest a combo of 1 and either 3 or 7.
If not then just 7.
Perhaps a minority vote, but I’m partial to 2.
8 , this would be amazing , do it on big canvas with oils <3

Awesome post on Sketch Survivor Island! Love the creative twist on sketching challenges—such a fun way to spark inspiration and push artistic boundaries. Keep it up!
So difficult to choose. I will go with 3! Very much looking forward to seeing the art progress through stages. If you have some words of advice in working with graphite powder it would be much appreciated.
4 has my vote but it was hard to choose!
What a creative and inclusive spark—Allen’s inviting us into his sketchbook to vote for the next piece to be developed is such a compelling way to witness process, not just product—and those custom 3D‑printed templates are a subtle game-changer for precision and flow!
Number 7
I’m really interested in seeing where you would go with 4
Very interested to see #7 fleshed out.
Don’t know if I’m too late, but if I had to choose just one, there’s something I really like about number 3.
