This is a great piece. I wouldn't have recognized it as a Leyendecker at first glance though. Definitely recognize the figures as his style, but the smoothly rendered forms with sharply carved highlights are nowhere to be seen in this painting. I wonder with the light washes if this was a prelim or study.
This one is from Leyendecker's early career before he settled into his stronger shape oriented style, but strong drama and design are apparent. What a great piece!

I had heard about Leyendecker before (probably in mr James Gurney's blog). But I don't remember ever seeing anything so stunning!
Yeah, this painting is rarely reproduced in his books, and is one of my favorites by far.
