Duuuuuuudes, so stoked to have painted THE Green Goblin for Magic the Gathering. Spiderman was my favorite comic book as a kid. And Green Goblin is about the No. 1  villain I could hope to paint.

This month I will take you through the piece bit-by-bit. From the ref I used to the sketch to the acrylic underpainting and the final Oil paint on top. Pop some corn and saddle up!

(I feel like I want to do an annoying maniacal laugh…)

Rough sketch

Now we make that more consistent. If I have the time, I always like to do a traditional Graphite Drawing. Even after all these years with a stylus in my hand, I am still more comfortable with graphite. There is just something more organic with how the lines go down for me.  This drawing is scanned, printed out and mounted to panel.

And finally I paint on top of the drawing. Starting with an acrylic layer for texture and establishing my base middle values. Then on to oil for the extra drying time and blending.

Finally 2 years later, it is released as a magic card! (And a good Magic Card too- meaning the card is playable in the game.)

And in a surprise twist, this card flips over and there is a whole other painting on the reverse. The alter ego of Green Goblin, Norman Osborne! (But we will have to talk about that another day.\)

(And if you really want to geek out on Spiderman… the guitar riff in the video is by me, and is a take on the Spiderman theme song from the 80’s cartoon. And… I played it on a Spiderman guitar, lol!)
